Ashbourne Raptors is a volunteer-run basketball club founded in August 2024 by a small group of enthusiasts united by a shared love of the game and a determination to bring basketball back to Ashbourne. From the outset, the club received valuable support from Basketball Ireland, helping it get off the ground in those crucial early stages. That passion and competitive spirit have inspired our committee members to give generously of their time, experience and energy for the benefit of the community, entirely on a voluntary basis.
In its first year, the club operated as a non-competitive, introductory programme, focused on raising awareness of basketball in Ashbourne and the surrounding villages. The response from parents and young players was fantastic, and it gave us the confidence to take the next step. Building on that momentum. In 2025, In 2025, Ashbourne Raptors entered two teams – U14 Boys and U16 Boys – into the NEBB League. The U14s enjoyed a strong debut season, finishing fourth in the league, and earned their place in the cup competition, where they gained invaluable experience against tough opposition.
Today, the club welcomes children as young as seven, giving them the opportunity to learn the game, build confidence and make new friends through basketball. We’re also proud to offer Social Ladies Basketball sessions, providing a fun, relaxed and welcoming environment for women in the community to enjoy the sport regardless of experience or ability.
Everyone is welcome at Ashbourne Raptors.
Players are welcomed regardless of where they are from, their level of experience, gender or ethnicity. We are a proudly multinational club that celebrates diversity and supports individuality. We believe basketball is a game for everyone: no matter your background or skill level, there’s a place for you here.
Looking ahead
Our vision is to continue growing Ashbourne Raptors by introducing more age groups across the club, with a particular focus on establishing girls’ teams in the near future. We believe every child in Ashbourne and the surrounding area should have the opportunity to play basketball, and we’re committed to building a club that reflects and serves our whole community.
From those early days of introducing the sport to the community, Ashbourne Raptors has grown into a competitive basketball club with real ambition, and we’re only getting started.
